I Just Cannot Finish This Book Because...

There are many different reasons why we may not finish a book that we are reading. Other than losing interest the other big reason for me is that I'm afraid of either the book series to be over or that a character that I love might die. I am sure all of us book lovers faced this problem at some point.


I never realized how afraid I was to finish a book until I started to read A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sara J. Maas. It didn't hit me until I read the teaser for it shortly after I finished A Court of Mist and Fury. I had preordered the book and got tickets to attend the book signing for my town. I was excited to read what would happen in the book. The book signing was amazing and I was feeding off of everyone’s excitement. The next day I started to read the book and with each chapter's end, I was relieved when no one I cared about died. It took me almost two months to read it.

So why was I left with this fear of one of the characters I've gotten to know the last year since I discovered this series and fell in love with this world? It was one book, Allegiant by Veronica Roth. Its the 3rd book in the Divergent series. So what happened in this book that makes me fear reading or finishing books?  If you haven't read this series I'm going to spoil it for you. It was Tris' death. I've read many books where the antagonist dies so why did this one scar me so badly that I emotionally could not handle the loss of Rhysand or Feyre? I saw so much of myself in Tris. In a weird way, I saw myself in her. Felt like I could be her if I was born in that world. And when she died I didn't take it hard because it would make me dead, but it felt all wrong. He death seemed meaningless and not needed. I felt betrayed as a reader who saw so much of herself in Tris.

That was one of the few times I have ever almost thrown a book against a wall. I didn't plus I was reading it on my Kindle so throwing that would have broken it with how angry I was. I finished the book because the completist in me wouldn't let me leave it unfinished especially with how little was left. This has scarred me that if I'm very attached to any characters I'm terrified for them to die.

So each time I picked up A Court of Wings and Ruin I prayed and hoped that our beloved characters would not die. I could handle their heartbreaks and fears, but not their deaths. I didn't want to have to relive losing Tris all over again, but this time with Feyre. I do identify with Feyre as well that I would be heartbroken if anything happens to her. 

Anyone else shares this feeling? Has a book left you so emotionally drained that you can not finish it or pick up the next book because your heart just cannot take it?

What I Am Reading the Week of September 18th

I got bitten by the I need to read all the books I've started bug this week, which is several books. I feel ashamed that I have not made much progress with these books since they are all either quick reads or I am near the end. After I finished A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas I've had trouble focusing on any books. I will talk about that book at a later date, but I was very hesitant to read and finish it because I knew I would have a book hangover from it.

This Week I'm reading:

I think I have been reading this book for months. I've been reading it here and there. The reason why I haven't really been pushing to finish it is I've gotten mad at Jamie so many times in this book that I've had to put it in time out. Am I the only one who does this?

This book series is a quick read for me, but for some reason, I just read the first page and then stopped reading it. It's a nice quick mystery novel that had a tiki theme to it and it always fun to read. I'll have to start this one back up, maybe with a tiki drink to sip.

This series I put aside once I started getting into A Court of Thornes and Roses series, but now that has finished I can dig into this series again. I am still not very far into it, but I hope to get a few more chapters done by this weekend.

A Few Quick Book Reviews

Man has it been that long since I've reviewed the books I've finished reading. I'm slowly getting books read, but I didn't realized I have 3 books to review. Since that is the case I will quickly review them here and mention what I am currently reading.


The Monuments Men

Yes the nerdy historian in me had to read this book before I saw the movie. This book is a very well written book that the non history love will enjoy. It tells an interesting story about the men and woman who saved thousands of art treasures and artifacts that Hitler tried to hide and destroy.

Gone Girl

I had such high hopes for this book due the hype it had received. I was very disappointed and felt like I was lied to. I did not see how this book got such a following. Yes, it's twist is unexpected, but I don't think it was that great.

Flash and Bone

I finally started reading this series. This book wasn't as bad as others have been. It was a quick read and I didn't want to throw it across the room. It will probably be a while until I read the next books.

Soulless

This book is such a new twist on the vampire/werewolf genre that we've seen recently. It is written well and I think it needs to be recognized for how it's pulled the boring old stories of vampires and werewolf's out of that.

Top Ten Tuesday: Fallen's Top Ten Books Read in 2011

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme by The Broke and the Bookish

This week's top ten list is my top ten books I've read in 2011.

Like a lot of people I think this is going to be hard to list. I read some great books, but I am not sure I have read 10 great books. I also not sure how to order them because some books are equal in my mind so I am going to order them the best I can.

1. The Hunger Games- I read this book on pure accident. I saw it listed on Amazon's top books list and after reading the synopsis I decided I had to read it. I didn't expect it to be so amazing and just pull me into it.

2. The Maze Runner- Another book I wasn't sure about, but once I read it I was completely taken by it and instantly fell in love with it.

3. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo- To be honest I thought this books and the others were crappy chick lit books based on the commercials I saw of the book with people reading it on the Kindle. I sampled the book on my Kindle and soon found out that it was not cheesy chick lit, but an amazing crime/mystery book.

4. The Scorch Trials- Just like with The Maze Runner this book took me under it's spell and I could not wait to see where it took me.

5. Mockingjay- While this book is the last of the series I thought it was amazing, not as amazing as The Hunger Games, but it wrapped up the story and had some amazing elements to it.

6. Catching Fire- Yes, the second book comes last for me, but I still found it interesting the story about the past Hunger Games.

7. The Girl Who Played with Fire- Since I loved the first book I had to read the other books in this series. I thought this one was pretty good.

8. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest- Same as the book above.

9. Swan Thieves- I enjoyed her first book The Historian, since that's what I studied in school before I switch to criminal justice. So when I saw she wrote a new book about a painting I had to read it. A very interesting story that I think was written just a bit better than The Historian.

10. Sin in the Second City- The history nerd in me had to pick up this book. It is interesting to see all the parts of Chicago that worked together or against each other. It's all about prostitution in Chicago and the Everleigh sisters who were on top.

So what is on your top ten books you read in 2011?
